This thread is a continuation of an off-topic on 'worst verse'.

For some reason US presidents' last words stick in my mind. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th 1826 - exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence of which they were both instrumental in drafting.

Jefferson died first with the words - 'is it the fourth?' on his lips. A few hours later Adams met his maker with 'Thomas Jefferson lives!'. Oh the irony.

What is the answer? [Silence] In that case, what is the question?
- Gertrude Stein

scary thought - what did she hear in the silence?

Any suggestions?

To save y'all trailing back through the archives, here's the story so far.

Is it true that Oscar Wilde's last words were -
"Either this wallpaper goes or I go"

I've heard that story before and I can't give you an honest answer. Oscar Wilde died in disgrace and exile in Paris of meningitis when he was only 44 (his anniversary comes up next month). Though his life was well documented his final days seem to have been spent in relative obscurity. Those that knew him said that he kept his sharp wit with him to the end so he may have actually said the quote above. There are plenty of Wildean scholars in these hallowed walls. I'll accost a few once they are sober and get the truth out of them.

Speaking of death bed words (and I really think we should start a new thread on this subject) I'm reminded of the joke about Robin Hood who is lying on his death bed. His merry men are crowded around him. He pulls out his bow and arrow and tells them 'I will fire this arrow and where it lands that will be my resting place'.........

......So they buried him on top of the wardrobe.

Last words of Pancho Villa:
"Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something."

Jo, that was right thoughtful of you; not only re-posting the thread (it does get confusing around here) but also for your courtesy in speaking our language over/across/down here (i.e. "y'all.")

Looks like it is starting right here!

And that can't be all bad!
