I have always heard this word pronounced buh-SALT. But today on the History Channel this guy who spoke like an American called it BASS-alt.
How do you-all say it?

I've heard both pronunciations for years. Just assumed it was a regionalism like with almonds and pecans. I tend to accent the ultimate syllable.

In the context of my study of geology and my conversations with geologists (mostly US) over several decades, the pronunciation there seems to be buh-SALT. In the population at large (US), I have on rare occasions heard the pronunciation BAY-salt.

It is all over Israel, especially in Galilee, and they
say BAY-salt, at least from my conversations there.

The term (at least among the geologists in the southern South) is pronounced "BAH salt".

Not to argue, Faldage, but I used the the term "Who's to argue?" felicitously. As in "Wanna fight?" smile
