Ok, so I have a funny story, that just happens to have a pun added in for good measure. It is not often that I laugh Out Loud in genuine mirth, when someone tells one of those cute stories about their kids, or their relatives' kids. But this one had me howling......

My co-worker was telling a story of her brother's children, whose snooty mother does not allow them to chew gum, ever, because she considers it de´classe´. Well, it seems that one of the boys really, really likes gum, and will go to any lengths to obtain it: begging it from other children, asking adults to buy it for him, slipping coins into gumball machines in grocery stores.........all behind his mother's back, of course. But, his favorite, and apparently most successful, manner in getting his gum fix, is snagging the mother lode from underneath tables in restaurants! Gag! The mother seems to forget this everytime they go out to eat, and is always appalled and aghast upon discovering the wad of previously masticated gum, in her darling son's mouth, once they are in the car heading home.

I can just see the scene now: Snooty Mother glances in the rear view mirror to see why Junior is so uncharacteristically quiet in the back seat, and shrieks when she spies his mouth furiously working away (he must soften the specimen, after all) on what she suddenly knows must be his latest prize from under the restaraunt table.

Ok, so that part of the story had me laughing, but then when my other co-worker said "Oh, he was getting all his gum booty "Under the Table" I really howled!

Hmmmmmm, it doesn't sound so funny when I write it here......perhaps this is one of those 'you had to be there' things?!

Dear RR: that mother is very foolish to make a big issue about anything so trivial as gum chewing.Never start a fight you can so easily lose. A parent who is tyrranical about trivial things is very likely to lose the affection of the child, and make him (or her)rebel in many ways.

I'm not going to work too hard on this one. I might actually come close to figuring out what it's supposed to mean.

you had to be there

Like the one about the two Eskimos sitting on the iceberg and one points up and says, "Radar"?

Not sure if you are ridiculing my story, Faldage, or merely teasing me? Since I prefer to believe no one has reason to ridicule me, I shall assume you are merely teasing me.

Teasing will work. But also my pun comprehension is pretty low. The lovely ASp has to tell me when I've made one.

In reply to:

The above is an endearing scene to imagine. What follows is a bit of Faldagian-AnnaStrophician dialogue:

Faldage: Si tu id aeficas, ei venient. Ager Somnia

AnnaStrophic: Why, Faldage, you've made another one of your famous puns!

Faldage: No joke! Clever of me, Duckie!

AnnaStrophic: Oh, you do entertain me always in the way your great mind roams.

Faldage:Nihil est--in vita priore ego imperator Romanus fui.

AnnaStrophic: Why you've just made another pun, Faldage!! Would you like me to explain it to you?

Faldage: Te audire no possum. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure.

I think Faldage and AnnaStrophic must have a good time sitting around biding the time--Faldage speaking in Latin puns and AnnaStrophic pointing his puns out to him. Lots of energy there.

(Here's the site from which I gathered Faldage's Latin phrases since I speak no Latin and had to cheat:

http://www.biopsych.net/latin_phrases_for_all_occasions.htm

...and if the above phrases were actually something completely different from what they were purported to be, please excuse my ignorance.)
