vilipend (VIL-uh-pend) verb tr.

1. To treat someone with contempt.

2. To disparage.

Unquestionably a Type-3. When I presented it to Laverne she said it sounds like an infection of the bowel

i guess i am not the only one who sometimes gets the word of the day late..

Yes, it is related to vilify, (and it is the word of the day today)

vilify

The -pend of vilipend oughtn't to be confused with pendeō (pendēre, pependī) 'to hang (down), be suspended' (not to be confused with Latin American Spanish pendejo from VL *pectinculus 'small toothed comb', later 'short hairs' < pecto 'to card, comb'), rather it is from pendō (pendere, pependī, pensum) 'to weigh (out), pay; consider'. I suggest that a new adjectival form, vilipensive, be coined tout de suite.

[f. ppl. stem of L. vilipendere]

Abusive.
1824 Blackw. Mag. XVI. 3 Strains not simply laudative of Oporto, but vituperative and vilipensive of Bourdeaux. 1838 Fraser's Mag. XVII. 468 Southey..tacks vilipensive prefixes and postfixes to several of these.

edit: this'll fit nicely into my 'connections' theme

Oh, well, dang. I'm in good company, though, both Blackwell's and Fraser's magazines: port and cigars in the library. (BTW, the zh in my name is a digraph, i.e., dzhejmz.)

fit nicely

At yours, hors de service, bootless withal, coz.
