Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof,
and the mighty men of valour. 3And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and
go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. 4 And seven priests shall
bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams horns:and the seventh day ye shall compass
the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 5And it shall come
to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the
sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the
city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

it seems like Anu's second citation doesn't really fit the proffered definition. it's more of just a direct reference to the walls of Jericho as opposed to it being out of the way... am I just not reading it kerecktly?

Dear etaoin: Can you figure out the meaning of "Jacob's Field" There is a ballpark by that name,
and in the Bible Schechem violated Jacob's daughter Dinah in Jacob's field. Which is referred to?

I think he's definitely referring to the Cleveland Indians ballpark. without more of the article, however, I find it a bit of a challenge to figure out exactly what he's saying...

I agree, etaoin. The citation does not fit the context of the expression described. Frankly, I've never heard the expression "go to Jericho" before.....people have told me to go to other places, but never to Jericho...

The Biblical reference is from 2 Samuel 10:2-5. King David decided to send ambassadors of peace to a new, neighboring king, but his ambassadors were suspected of being spies and were ill treated.

2 Samuel 10:4-5 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
