OP Mencken gives US "trained-nurse" as eqivalent of UK "hospital-nurse". An instructor in German I had just before WWII told me of unpleasant experience he had in
Boston hospital when he called nurses "sister" which he
had learned in UK. The Boston nurses thought he was being
insultingly familiar, and ignored his requests for pain
medication, etc.
