Many of the detective-type TV shows in the last year
have talked about cheap knock off women's apparel purses, high heels, etc. Gucci knock offs: cheap copies: ersatz, I suppose.

I learned this word in my early teens when I read as many stories as I could find about escapes from POW camps in WWII. It was usually applied to the "coffee" they sometimes got.

I don't follow, how do coffee and escapes relate?

coffee and escapes are separate ideas. he liked stories about escapes, and the prisoners often complained about the ersatz coffee they got in the camps.

When my sister was a child (well, so was I, but that's irrelevant) she never told our parents where she was or where she was going, because she believed that if she knew where she was, obviously they also knew. I employ the same sort of logic: if I know what I'm talking about, so do you. Go ahead, I dare you: show me the flaw in that!

Wherever you are, that's where you are, not somewhere else.

I watched a few movie 'escape' stories too and I thought ersatz was a poor substitute for the real thing, like when prisoner were given bread made from sawdust or potato scraps.
