"virga" may apply to rain, but I believe the word "sublimation" describes what happens to snow. It happens here in Interior Alaska when it is so cold that the snow just disappears before hitting the ground.

Sublimation certainly describes the process of a solid going directly to a gas but the term virga applies equally to all forms of precipitation.
