According to the AHD cycle is from PIE kwel- (to revolve, move around, sojourn, dwell), as is English wheel. Circle is from PIE sker- (to turn, bend). Ring is, too, but not by way of Greek kirkos, krikos (Ha! Metathesis in ancient Greek) They're more like second cousins twice removed than grandfather-grandson.
