Little Nell and her grandfather have encountered a couple men who run a Punch and Judy show, and are making repairs on the puppets. Asked why they are doing it in the churchyard, the owner replies:
"'Why you see,' rejoined the little man, 'we're putting up for to-night at the public-house yonder, and it wouldn't do to let 'em see the present company undergoing repair."
To be sure a strolling player might not know the difference, but "illusion" is what theatre hopes to achieve.

wwh, I am almost positive we've discussed delusion v. illusion on AWAD at length somewhere recently...

Dear WW: Re-reading my post, I see I was deluded, there was only illusion in question. But if you can't remember the previous discussion, few other members will mind repetition.
It would not create any foix gras or mantle.
