OP Everybody (in Northern Hemisphere) should be able to recognize Ursa Major, commonly called "The Big Dipper" and use the "pointers" to locate the Pole Star. I remember going deer hunting in northern Maine, and arriving at north end of Moosehead Lake at night. My friend had an expensive illuminated compass, but misread it, and thought south was north, until I pointed out the Pole Star to him.
