Dr. Bill sent me a site with a long list of 5-letter words; it's aimed toward those who want to make "magic squares".

I don't exactly trust the authenticity, esp. after seeing that bambi is not only a first name, but a film "faun". But that's neither here nor there. I was curious about the following entry:
basel - a Swiss city; tanned skin; basil
.
Wsieber, do you happen to know if that city was named for the herb? Or perhaps they grow a lot of it there?

Dear Jackie: The name "Basel" was derived from Roman "Basilica":
"n 374 A.D.
The Name of Basel (Basilia) is first mentioned by a Roman historian, Ammanius
Marcellinus, on the occasion of a visit of the Emperor Valentinian I to the city."

As we have learned, the name of the Swiss city, Basel, is through the Latin from the Greek, basilike, from feminine of basilikos, royal. The name of the herb, basil, on the other hand, is through the Latin from the Greek basilikon from the neuter of basilikos, royal.
