It always conjures up a picture of a figure, dimly seen through mists of incense, imposing, bearded, robed and mitred and carrying a heavy, elaborately decorated, staff. He started out as a priest in a Carpatho-Russian congregation, St. John's in Perth Amboy, NJ. I always loved the sound of that word, archimandrite, and wondered about it's origin. Eastern Rite priests are allowed to marry, BTW.
