astonish too share the same root, tonare, latin, to thunder, originally, extonare (with the ex as an intensifier) altered through french and middle english into astonish.

But, really, the cannon is pretty astonishing in the first place in the 1812--a machine gun obligato would be nerve-wracking.

In checking the spelling of cannon here in MW, I read
that one of its definitions is that of the projecting piece from a bell:

can·on : the projecting part of a bell by which it is hung : EAR


Cool, huh?

Special note to Fiberbabe, if she should read here:

The word from which "ear" comes is an Old English word meaning "edge."
