I have searched every way I can think of, and have been unable to find its etymology. It just does not seem like a coinage that Bowditch would have created. But where did he get it from? Many words ending in "-tage" are of French origin, so I tried various spellings of first part of word, but had no luck. It has a Japanese look to me which would mean it was pronounced coo-mah-tah-gay. Of course, its having been in the English language since 1854 may have had profound effects on its pronunciation. Also, I can't seem to squeeze any sense out of it in Japanese, but my resources are pretty slim.
