Dear consuelo: I used to commute by train, and enjoyed getting off while train was still moving quite rapidly the way I had seen the trainmen doing it. You couldn't have done in on the bus, which would not have a pair of handles on each side of the steps as trains used to. By hanging onto the bars, one in each hand, facing the interior of the train, on the right hand side of the train you let go of the right hand (nearest the engine), land on your right foot in such a way that the rotation of your body takes up enough of your forward momentum that you only trot a couple steps. Great fun, but the trainmen used to get mad at me.

Until I started thinking about what I was saying, I regularly used "head over heels". Quite pointless really.

I was unfamiliar with "ass over teakettle." My grandfather always said, and the rest of the family after him, "ass over applecart."

In our family, it's ass over tincup. There seems to be a common thread of containers for liquid. Still a mystery how these come about.

I cannot believe all these grandmothers said that a-- word, that even I will not use!

I tried arse over teakettle on Google, and found this delightful site on Britspeak, with my entry in the Slang section:
