My daughter's boyfriend, Josh, in an attempt to cause me to realize the lure of sports, directed me to what he calls the "Most Intelligent Football Board Online."

He directed me to Cyberhigh Stadium: www.denverbroncos.cjb.net

OK. I went there. I clicked on a forum. This is what I read there:

Playoff takes. Whats Yours?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the Ravens will beat Miami, but I hope I'm wrong.
I think Philly will beat Tampa, but could care less.
I think the Packers will beat the 9ers, I hope I'm right.
I don't really know what to think about the Raiders/Jets game, but I hope the Jets win.
My playoff picks look like this
Ravens
Philly
Packers
Jets

What gives? I don't understand what's the lure of this kind of discussion??????? This is the strangest thing to consider--and to hear Josh keeps coming back to this board to read what someone else has listed.

Stranger than Strange,
WordWrapped

Despite my having been male for as long as I can remember, I've yet to figure this "guy thing" out either.
Heck, I still don't even know why we US'ns call modified rugby football, when the rest of the world plays REAL football.

Dear AnnaS:

Care to translate the Latin? There are those of us who don't know it.

Best regards,
WW

translate the Latin

You were probably baffled by that loquitur. It's a deponent verb; passive in form, active in meaning.

The thing speaks for itself.

And me, I'm one of the few Americans who has absolutely no interest in football. Or maybe the ones who are interested are just more vocal...

Oh! The other shoe just dropped--I think.
"Res ipse loquitur." ... "The thing speaks for itself."
"The thing speaks for itself" IS the translation??

Yep.

but I messed up on my genders. It should be ipsa (as Keiva knows) not ipse.

Which was *my fault. I gave her res ipse loquitur from memory. Upon reading Keiva's version I googled about 60 hits for ipse and three thousand some odd for ipsa so I looked it up in an old Latin text book and discovered that it's ipse, ipsa, ipsum mfn and res is feminine.

No credit to me, A & F. In law, it's a reasonably common and familiar term.

So do you agree it speaks for itself re: football message boards, Keiva?
