While perusing an online dictionary I stumbled across the word onomastics:

onomastics

SYLLABICATION: on·o·mas·tics
PRONUNCIATION: n-mstks
NOUN: (used with a sing. or pl. verb) 1a. The study of the origins and forms of proper names. b. The study of the origins and forms of terms used in specialized fields. 2. The system that underlies the formation and use of proper names or terms used in specialized fields.

I was surprised that a Board search came up empty (or perhaps I searched incorrectly). It cross-threads rather
nicely with a few of our discussions, most recently WW's "terms of art".

Not expecting the thread to go anywhere, since I don't have a question about the word; just thought I'd share

And they have succumbed to political correctness. The use of the term squaw is now considered so offensive to aboriginal Americans that the board is systematically removing it from names of things like lakes and passes (there was a Squaw Pass here in Colorado and I remember reading somewhere that it would likely be changed.) Now what they'll do when they get to Squaw Valley is a good question. That's a pretty good sized area to suddenly rename.

Onomastics ... isn't that an even more specialised form of bistromatics? Just asking.

The idiot also known as Capfka ...
