The crew of NASA's space shuttle Atlantis is using English as their primary language, as not all of the American astronauts on the flight speak Russian, and the two cosmonauts "know enough English to laugh at my jokes", said shuttle pilot Scott Altman, acc'g to Louisville's Courier-Journal this morning. The space station is scheduled to have its first permanent residents in Nov. I haven't seen
anything that specifies that the primary language there will be English, but it makes sense to me that it would.

Today's article about the Olympics had some neat stories of individualized struggles to get to the Olympics: the two
Koreas are entered under one flag for the first time in 40
years; and the lady of Aboriginal descent, runner Cathy
Freeman, lit the inaugural torch.

We really are a planet of folks who want pretty much the same things. Celebrate diversity, but bless unity, too!

once again, jackie, you are so right.
perhaps we are not kept apart by our differences but by our similarities. there's no enemy more fearsome than the one that resembles yourself.
perhaps when we see the earth from space we will be able to comprehend that it is like a tear, crying for the lost opportunities of the present.

tsuwm, I probably should have said "full-time"--I doubt that anyone plans to spend the rest of their life up there!

Oh, william, you write so beautifully! And so truly, too--
I do believe that what makes us fear others is often that they exemplify in some way something that we fear is in ourselves. I think in some ways the earth might be crying, but oh, couldn't it be a bubble of joy, just as well? All
blue and white and swirling from sheer exuberance at all the wondrous things life has to offer? Why, the very seasons, caused by its orbiting, are miraculous! And its guardian/nurse, the moon, delicately pulling earth's skirt of tides down for modesty? Oh! Don't forget its self-adornment of a rainbow necklace! No, a tiara! Oh, we do all of us have troubles, but we have so much to be
thankful for, too!
