Techies delight:

Does someone know the reason many if not most of the fora (?) I view have this (or equivalent) in front of them? It would appear to be the text of several cookies that I would anticipate shouldn't have been visible at all, but here they are...Is there perhaps a setting on my IE browser that should be modified? (Sorry, I know this is supposed to be a board for queries about words but it's starting to get annoying!)

Set-Cookie: words.read=,41506,,41511,,41519,%
2C41303,,41305,,41308,,41317,,41319,%
2C41323,,41332,,41335,,41347,,41354,%
2C41381,,41390,,41389,,41452,,41393,%
2C41395,,41421,,41433,,41436,,41442,%
2C41462,; Set-Cookie: words.read=,41506,,41511%
2C%; ... Connection: close Content-Type: text/html

...for a total of sixty-two lines.

Has anyone else seen it?

At work we changed over from Microsoft's Internet Explorer to Netscape yesterday at our ISP's insistence (something to do with avoiding viruses). I can now only look at one or two threads per forum before I get a message saying "The operation timed out when attempting to contact wordsmith.org"

How do I get round this? Are my awad days numbered?

No, I think it's something to do with the server here, Mr B. Over several days (for me at least) it's been like treacle in a hairbrush.

Even with two or three windows open, browsing has been the slowest I have ever encountered on any site at any time - and all other sites are allowing access normally.

The only break in the slowdown was yesterday for a time. Now it's back to straining porridge through a string vest.

MaxQ -

Regrettably, things are never as simple as they should/could be. My machine is part of a fairly large LAN and the cache isn't available to me for manipulation (at least I think it isn't). Guess I'll try a few more things - like booting up without logging on - and see if that gives any hint of being progress. If not I'll just just ignore the cookie crumbs.

In any case, thanks for the suggestion; I'll explore it.

Unfortunately, wofahulicodoc, part of your problem is the fact that you are viewing AWAD through your LAN. I had exactly the same problem with AWAD at work in Zild. I asked our LAN administrator wherefore, and he gave me a complicated technical explanation (which I mercifully forgot immediately). However, what it boils down to is what Explorer sees over a LAN. Cookies on your workstation are not the issue. Your LAN server's cookies may, however, be it. The AWADTalk software uses cookies like they're going out of fashion. It's how your server deals with them which is affecting how your browser is acting up. Have a chat to your LAN people.

Mav, if you are using one of the vaunted Pommy ISPs as I am, everything will be running like treacle. They've gone into spasm over the Nimda (or whatever) virus. Also, they haven't managed to recover from the disruption to telecommunications caused by the attacks in America. This is their explanation for it, anyway. I've already offered mine (Demon Net) the services of a really professional ISP outfit to get them up and running in a business-like fashion. Really, it just seems typical of the telecommunications business here generally, in my admittedly-limited experience.

Bingley, I think you're being done under by your ISP ... Netscape is usually the problem, not the answer ... but you've probably already guessed that. Bin Laden may be bribing them.

On top of which, the server that AWADTalk sits on is probably a Commodore 64 or its immediate predecessor. Does any USn have access to a good, fast, Internet server which can be offered to Anu free of charge?

Whew!

Well, AWADtalk is probably not housed on his server, but I don't know. Though, if he wants a faster server he could probably ask Ohio State for some type of grant. It would be for an educational purpose and he lives very close to OSU. But that's probably not plausible.

Today is one of the slowest day's since we've all experienced this problem... and even with 7% packet loss, I still load "theregister.uk" faster that I get "AWADtalk.ohio". I do have control over my LAN cache and it seems like an request overload on the AWAD server...

i don't know about that. most viruses thrive on the security holes offered by microsoft products

There sure are a lot of double-posts lately. Is this connected to the server problem, y'all think?

Are we R-rationed? I'm not stuttering, I'm talking about the R sign to show that we've replied to a pm. Some messages I know I've replied to (because I've got replies to my replies) don't have an R, so I'm just having to rely on memory for which ones I've already replied to and which ones I haven't.

My R's are okay so far, Bingley. The only problem I've had is slowness in screens coming up, except for the one day we couldn't access at all for a time.

I, too, just noticed the lack of r's on many of my pm's as well. Same as Bingley, I have several follw-up pm's citing previous pm.

Enigma suggested Ruanda for my rs. Getting a little cheeky.

We seem to be not just crossing threads here today, but macrame-ing a wall hanging

>p.s. the Greek Callipygos is the name of a famous statue of Venus(found in the "what's the use?" thread)

Bingley, you come back here and look what you started with your have no rs post!

bingley is deep asleep at this time.. enjoying chocolate-creme filled dreams i am sure..and won't be the least bit embarassed by the curves this thread is taking..

speaking of chocolate, words, and venus envy-- i think we should plan a cook off for the wordapalozza.. and have chocolate dreams, and nipples of venus, and generate some real venus envy. well, its open for discussion.. unless someone here has a confectionare like the one in Chocolat near by to purchase a supply.. and marry sweet words to sweet treats.

Dreams are ok, creams are ok, but if those other things are there, I'll be too embarrassed to show my face.

well, actually®, I was thinking more along the lines of someone who has laid claim to having the great and powerful ear. which would not include my own tself, in the universe as we know it.

Oh please do find a way of letting him know. I can't get through most of the threads because it takes tooooo much time to load everything. I hate missing anything but I do find I need to sleep every once in a while so overnighting it to catch up is not an option.

I have taken to playing Sherlock while waiting for the threads to come back. Ugh.

Oh, I'll bring the chocolate...we have the greatest fondue bars. Rich, smooth chocolate perfect for dipping ripe strawberries, bananas, pineapples. Yum.

Oh and fabulous rosettes for those who believe chocolate is its own reward and shouldn't be messed up with all those healthy fruity things.

We sell em so I'll get em for, well, free) How many do we need?

Where is a mournful emoticon?
My MD has forbidden me chocolate and caffeine ... I intend to bring a coffee maker thingie to the Wordapalooza and some decaf for self an any other poor souls .... (must put that on the list before I forget)
I will just have to content myself with the delightful aroma of *real chocolate ... I did discover that white chocolate is OK for me, but it just isn't the same.
Sigh

Let's see. A full moon on the 24th (according to the Farmers Almanac) A party with many many people, what better thing than chocolate to break the ice - better bring tons. (of course this is coming from a chocoholic)

I just finished my post that included automatic physical reactions--and right now my hands are ice-cold: I just got this from, from, that wonderful founder, Anu:
Hi Jackie,

Yes, we have been getting many more hits since some news
story came out. We're looking into upgrading the server.

I'll check out the R problem too.

How convenient. Isn't it amazing how Anu is always ready to solve a problem when Jackie brings it up (whisper, whisper, rumor, rumor, wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Many mercis for having brought this to his attention Jackie. It's nice to know he can do something about it.
