Fascinating stuff, William!
Your examples of English letters used in place of native-language words reminds me (in a backward fashion) of a lunch item one would often see on menus in Brazil: the ubiqutious X-burger. The letter X is Brazil is pronouned "sheese"; close enough to the English "cheese" to make it an acceptable substitute for short-order cooks and their customers

annastrophic, i guess the x burger could have a different meaning in america..
jackie, the japanese word for x rated videos is AV (pronounced "ay buee"). this comes of course from adult video which is also used but japanese prefer the abbreviation.
this reminds me of another borrowed word here, love ("rabu"), which is used in a kind of onomatopoeiac (sp?) expression. there are millions of words repeated double barrel to give the feeling of a situation or sound in japanese. for example "beta beta" means sticky, "pan pan" means full, like a balloon. "rabu rabu" refers to the situation of being in love and is accompanied by such a vivid image of love hearts bursting around the couple like a cartoon that it is quite musical. such is the power of language!

Sorry, I don't get the same image, possibly because Rabu is the Indonesian for Wednesday.
