We have two more famous AWADers among us:

(from the AWAD newsletter):

From: Chris Reiner
Subject: Redd

This word suggested to me interesting bit of linguistic convergence - of a
sort. Two completely unrelated, almost identical words that both have a
connection to fish.

In Spanish, red means net, like you'd catch a fish with (from the same root
that gives us reticulate - resembling a net - like the reticulated python,
whose markings look like a net over its body). So, one could readily catch
a red herring in a redd with a red.

-------------------------------

From: William W. Hunt
Subject: redd

When fish spawn, the bottom must be clear sand or else the developing ova
would not get enough oxygen. The fish spend a considerable amount of time
and energy agitating the water in the place they plan to deposit the ova,
to "redd up" the layer of dead or living algae. I have seen sunfish do this.
All along the edge of the pond there were light colored circles of their
nests, outlined by the dark dead algae layer. I have a hunch the males do
the work, to attract a roe laden female. So the name "redd" for a cleared
place for fish to deposit ova makes sense to me.

way cool =)

Um-mm, er, Ms. CR, I see you finally decided to post, having lurked long enough, have you?
I just saw these, myself. Kudos, you two. This is the second time in a few weeks that our sweet Dr. Bill has been famous.

Congratulations. No false modesty now. Bask in the limelight! It quickly fades.
Sigh

Why, yes. In fact, I've been reading the posts (with great interest, and much laughter) for so long that I almost feel I know most of you

And who is Chris Reiner?

That would be Hyla.

And I thought you were one of the socialites of the board.

Nah... I tested out more toward libertarian-lite.

(sorry, Hyla )

No worries - I'm not likely to take offense, as I'm still euphoric from seeing my name in the AWAD newsletter.

Side note, for them what's been following along at home: no baby yet. Was due on 6/19, so is nearly a week overdue. Turns out I'm no good at the waiting game.

You're no good at the waiting game? I can assure you that your SO is approaching the point where she would not care if we cut her open with a hacksaw and pulled the baby out through her liver, so long as she is finally rid of the pregnancy. FWIW, two weeks either way of the due date is entirely normal.

Please do keep us posted.

Hyla, if this is your first baby, you've probably got yet another week to go. First babies tend to be ca. 2 weeks late. Our first was, and my wife was 28 hours in labor. Second was just about on time and was born 45 minutes after we arrived at the hospital (it was a Sunday morning and the doctor told me to go ahead and go to church, it would be at least another 3 hours; did so, and returned to hospital to find wife in tears over having another boy); third was 2 days early and born in the E.R. (missed being born in the car by 2 minutes).
