On March 15, this venerable forum will celebrate one year of existence. I think we ought to do something to celebrate. Keeping in the spirit of the uniquely controlled anarchy of this community, I am going to suggest one type of celebration and then fall back and let y'all fall in. To wit: how about we each post our favorite thread from the past year and contribute to the virtual party something comestible/potable unique to our individual regions? Let's discuss it here first, and then, on the date, we'll start a new topic, to be the actual celebratory venue. I also suggest Jo aka jmh be the mistress of ceremonies, since she has demonstrated remarkable skill in that area.  (If this is too creepy to some, I do not want to hear about it)

AWADtalk is indeed something special, something worth celebrating. I am too new to have any clever ideas about which past threads deserve resurrection, and too lacking in talent to have any good new ideas. But I'll be in the cheering section when the more gifted among us go to work.

It is my opinion that duplications of sentiments will be quite acceptable. I also foresee a potential problem of two people adding on at the same time--bridget96 posted fourteen hundredths of a second before me the other day! I guess, maybe, whose-ever post came out on the bottom could take the responsibility for doing the editing to make them all on one post again. What do you-all think?

Love the idea, Jackie, but I'm afraid it will get unwieldy. Although there are supposedly about 2100 members of AWAD, someone estimated the other day that only about 70 or so post with any frequency. Even that many would create a difficulty, particularly with those coming on late, when a large and ever-growing piece has to be copied and pasted on. Besides that, I have had difficulty in copying and pasting onto the board, and have never succeeded in getting it to work, I don't know why, since I do it all the time with other stuff. (There is probably a simple explanation for that which hasn't occurred to me.)
Let me advance this suggestion -- all those who wish to do so (as many as possible) compose a brief message (say 25 words maximum to make it more interesting) and everyone post it on the 15th. Needless to say, we will all try our utmost for something clever, or outrageous, or both.

About resurrecting a favorite thread...I am afraid that with the 35 or so regular posters this might be a tad cumbersome with too much threads popping up with a NEW tag.
How about if we combine your and Jackie's suggestions this way...create a HAPPY BIRTHDAY thread. Anyone who wants to, can post either, a Thank-you to Anu, the reason why they like being here, a link to a favorite thread, and a celebratory regional recipe (or all four if they wish).
That way all the wishes will be neatly under one thread.
To get Anu to see it is an other matter...maybe wow or Jackie, who HAVE had success getting his attention, can send him a note saying "YOU MUST LOOK IN AWAD CHAT INFORMATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS ON MARCH 15TH"
We should get someone in NZ to start the Happy Birthday thread since they turn to the 15th before we do.
What do you think?
Oh and Jackie, tsk-tsk-tsk, outrageously flirting with Bill. I thought you had left us poor souls in the gutter.

This is a great idea, AnnaS! I'l certainly go along with it - or whatever variation we agree on. Mind you, the chances of us actually agreeing on anything is remote - already the ideas are proliferating. But wot the hell, archie, toujours gaie, and all that. (my grey cat, darkness, has just asked me to type that last bit) Whatever we decide - or not - I'll join in. BTW, doesn't a year go by quickly when your doing something other than working?

Count me in, too. I think the add on message is a good idea, but I don't think the random access plan will work. Unfortunately, the only counter suggestion I can come up with would probably bog down. That is to build a message through Send Private in some predetermined order. The organizer would have a list of participants that would be part of the message and each person would remove his or her name after adding and would send the new message on to someone else.

May I second the proposal that Max Quordlepleen is the fit and proper person to commence this Anniversary Madrigal? I sure am glad Jo (aka jmh) has agreed to be Madam Chairman! I still shrink from the idea of too much structure in the Happy Birthday thread but will go with the majority. Now, let me get this straight. Does this mean I (GMT -5) have to post before Jackie does? (GMT-6) . And Jackie, of course you are the only one to inform Anu of this initiative. Small suggestions.
Could we put the date in the thread header name *and* for each individual post? i.e.
Happy Birthday AWAD, 15 March 2001
That way, should The Great Anu deign to print it out the correct date would be on each message. This would also make it easy when Anu gets next year's greetings, and next, and next and ...
Posters might also consider a "dateline" to start the body of the post to make it easier for viewers to see the sequence on posts. Like news stories start.

Was there ever any question that Jackie is the one to draw The Wonderous One's attention to the thread?

YES Israel will join in - but as is the norm for me, I will answer with a question: if we are all going to post according to where we fit +/- GMT, shouldn't we perhaps have a particular time (in our own zone) at which we will do the duty? Tsuwm, as "the computer" attempts (albeit unsuccessfully) to eliminate paper (HA) you'll eventually (HA) have to get the "quilt-out" out and edit your quilt. They may replace cursive, but never a hand written "thank-you" note... I think the idea of a thread to send to Anu is great. Here are a couple thoughts of mine.
Each persons post should exemplify their personality over the past year.
Perhaps everyone should try to post at the same time in their respective time zones so they all come in about an hour apart. Most of you seem to be at work when you post, so would some time around 9:00 be good for everyone? (9:00 to 10:30 is pretty much the only time I have access to a computer at school.)
I think the header for each post after the first should be the city from which you are posting. (ie. Wellington, New Zealand" ; "Cincinnati, Ohio, USA") Also, each person should probably reply to the initial post so they're all in a straight line in threaded view.
And finally, I think everyone should conclude their post with their board name, real name, and date and time of joining.

That is : Happy Birthday AWAD 15 March 2001New Zealand- This Kiwi etc. etc. etc. or Israel - From this ancient land etc. etc. etc. Each persons post should exemplify their personality over the past year. People have been misrepresenting themselves?  Wouldn't everyone's posting at same time give the Machine a migraine? Especially if people who never or rarely post take the opportunity to express congratulations? wow

I mean 9:00 (or whatever time) for each time zone. That would mean that every time zone posts about an hour appart.
And by explifying one's personality I mean don't use some run-of-the-mill "Happy Birthday". Customize it to you personality in your other posts. (But I guess everyone would do that anyway.)

I agree with Faldage. We can't impose too much structure here. We catch as catch can, and - perish the thought - there might be a contributor or two who will be unable to post at all on the Ides. I will probably be at work at 9 am in my particular time zone on the momentous day. And the time stamps are already on the posts, anyway (albeit in U.S. Central Time). Yep- I agree with Jazz's plan as modified by AnnaS - It is a good idea to have a plan - else how can you change your plan? But it is also good to have it really simple so that anyone who doesn't or cannot follow it to the letter won't feel bad about being different. So - 9 am in your own time if possible, (but later is much better than never) - write as you would in any other post (as we assuredly would anyway!) - add your real name if you feel like it, but this ain't mandatory. Yeahhhh! let's go for it!

Why your pater should have chosen the ides of March for his annual warning (if warning it were, indeed!) is not immediatewly apparent. But, given his age, he would have remebered that the Russian Revolution took place in March 1917. The first session of the Moscow soldiers Soviet (the word is Russian for "committee") took place on March 1st and the Czar abdicated in favour of Grand Duke Mikhail on March 2nd. Within a year or so he was fabulously wealthy. But he feared the religious police so he retired from the priesthood, married, and gave the plant to his wife as a wedding present.
Weeks later there came a knock at the door, where Sam was soon held at spearpoint by the phalanx of Roman soldiers who waited without. Blustering, Sam said, "Have you come to worship my wife's elderberry plant?"

I would never dream of saying anything like this about any other thread, but would it be perhaps advisable for all of us to try and only post once on the birthday thread? I get the feeling that there might be numerous members posting to celebrate, and if many of these comments are met with the usual clever back-and-forth accompaniment, we might easily find ourselves with an unwieldy thread in our hands. My computer, for one, absolutely dislikes long threads, and lets me know every time  . Any thoughts on this? [lemme-know-if-I'm-overstepping-the-mark emoticon]

Perhaps, if you are thinking of some kind of tribute to AWAD, with sententious port-soaked, gout-ridden blokes rising up and asking others to be 'upstanding' (a word I loath, abhor, disdain, hate etc in this use) whilst they pour forth orotund, rodomontade oratory, then certainly a "Tribute to AWAD on its Anniversary" thread with single postings per person would be wonderful (else imagine the horror of a succession of after-dinner speakers with the added 'thrill' of heckling!), but I'd suggest a 'Birthday party' thread as well so that we can indulge in our well-worn drunken chat-up lines, criticise the canapes (and our host's taste in curtains and carpets), and look around for unoccupied bedrooms or jacuzzis...

Yes, a concurrent birthday party is a great idea - I never refuse an invitation (even if I slightly prefer Birnmigham to Southall!) No, I've managed to steer clear of gout, I'm happy to say. I heard, when I was young, that it was caused by drinking too much port, so I only drink the finest port available, and therefore can't afford to drink enough to get gout.
However, I encourage my female companions to imbibe the drink, on the old sailor's principle of "a port in every girl."

There is a substance called purine, which we get in our bloodstreams from foodstuffs such as red wine, pork, offal, and shellfish. Most people excrete it reasonably effectively in their urine. Unfortunately some of us don't do this so well for genetic reasons and the purine forms crystals which lodge around joints, most commonly those in the big toe but the ankles are another trouble spot. This is gout. The best preventives are to avoid purine rich foods and to drink lots of water. There is also medicine you can take to increase purine excretion during an attack. A bad toothache, I assure you, is absolutely nothing in comparison.

The dictionary mentions intestines, and scraps.They used to use intestines to make sausages, and that was a dandy way of getting botulism.(look that one up.) Much of the rest used to go into hotdogs. No thanks. So offal to me is hardly more appetizing than the "off-fall" so often washed away by the retromingent bovines.
A nicer word for gravy makings is giblets: heart, gizzard, and neck.

Dear Shoshannah: I used to go to take violin lessons with a couple very nice Jewish boys. I wish I had been able to match the talent of the younger one, who became a member of a major symphony orchestra.
One day on the way home, they stopped at a delicatessen, and came out with a package with some large black characters on it that I had never seen before. I asked what that meant. The older boy answered that it meant the meat was kosher. I asked what Kosher meant, and the older boy replied that it meant it was meat the rabbi had pissed on.

The term offal is used a lot in the UK. Mr Bingley isn't jsut talking about the bits inside a chicken, used for gravy. It refers to anything beyond the main meat of the animal such as liver, kidney, heart, the bits that become tripe (yuk), sweetbreads, etc. We need bel for this, the French love their offal.

For offal, my dictionary gives as second meaning, "refuse, garbage". Glad to hear UK version is more palatable. I have never before heard it used to mean anything fit to eat.I can guarantee you will never see any supermarkets here advertisiing offal for sale.

My father used to be fond of pickled cow stomach, the part that looks like over sized honeycomb, called tripe. I would eat it, rather than offend him, but I have never bought any.
Haggis I have been told is a variety of bits of heart, lung,liver, kidneys etc with oatmeal and other vegetables and seasonings cooked in a sheep stomach. I have never had any, and would not much care to partake of it, but the Yankee in me approves of not wasting any food. "Wilful waste brings woeful want."

At a Burns Day dinner a portion of haggis was portioned out and since I had never had it before and will try most things once, I ate some, taking my cue from more experienced eaters -- I ate just the inside, the meat, spices etc ...Delicious!
Then about 30 minutes later I started to itch and small welts appeared ... I am allergic to liver and didn't realize there was any in the haggis! Minor outbreak that an antihistamine tablet and lots of water took care of.
But no haggis for me anymore which I do not regret as I am not a fan of internal organ meats.

ooof, I also, have only heard the word offal to describe animal waste.
Most Québecois I know are not overly fond of eating beastly internal organs like tripe, kidney or heart. I do have several French (from France) friends who do love these. A lot of people do like liver though.
There is also on concoction that the older generation used to eat a lot of. It is call boudin (boo-dane). It is spiced congealed beef blood in a piece of tripe (like a sausage). It smells absolutely awful while cooking. I am usually game on tasting anything but I just can`t make myself try it. The only thing that comes to mind is a scab and (sorry, I can`t continue, yuck, yuck, yuck).

Of course, the Pennsylvania Dutchman has to note that one of the famous dishes using offals is scrapple, which is basically cornmeal mush with the addition of the offals from slaughtering a hog. While there are those, including many non-Dutchmen, who love it, I can't stand the stuff. It comes in large bricks, which you slice and fry. When you're frying it, it smells like the town garbage dump is on fire.
Now on the other hand, tripe is really something else. There is a dish native to Philadelphia called Pepper Pot. It's a soup and includes small pieces of tripe. One of my favorites.
And then there is Tripes a la mode de Caen -- my mouth is watering just thinking about that.

i hadn't realized menudo was made out of tripe...thanks for ruining it for me anyone like Korean food? there's a soup called shul-lung thang that pretty much includes the entire cow, sans the skin and bones. there's another Korean dish that is made mostly out of tripe (i can't recall the name) but at least in that case it's still 'whole' so you know what it is you're getting into as you browse the buffet. i've never been able to get past the appearance, though i've heard it's delicious. oh dear, i'm beginning to feel a bit ill...

Oh, my. How interesting that "offal" is edible across the pond. I'm thinking happy thoughts about sun-ripened tomatoes, and corn on the cob that you pick, clean on the way back from the garden, and boil as soon as you get inside.
And speaking of "corn," I know that the term once was a generic term for "grain" (I haven't tried to explain that to my three-year-old yet, although we have a book which talks about bunnies hiding in the corn but pictures them in a wheat field; very confusing for him) and I wonder whether it is still used that way outside of the US. If so, what is the term used to describe maize? Maize, I suppose. [puzzled emoticon]

When in Ireland I was served Irish bacon which was like a fatty ham, more ham than fat. In US what we call bacon is called "streaky bacon" in Ireland and is cheaper than Irish bacon.

Watching "Red Dwarf' a character keeps talking about curry vindaloo.
HELP .. it's driving me nuts.

maize = sweetcorn
Not here in NZ. For us, maize is the type of corn used to make cornflour, corn chips, etc. No one that I know would ever dream of eating "maize on the cob." A friend of mine who died recently was largely responsible for developing and introducing several varieties of what were intially called "supersweet" corn to NZ, and he never called them maize either. One of them, honey and pearl, is actually too sweet for my taste.

Hi Wow Vindaloo is actually two things. 1. vin daa loo Spicy, fatty pork dish from Goa, incorporating the glorious Southern Indian coconut and spices tradition with the Protuguese pork culture and coming up with a sublimely delicious (f your palate and liver can take it) dish, that goes hand in hand with other Goan classic like sorpotel ( shorrpo-thell) {almost exclusively diced cubes of pork fat cooked in a deep red 'sauce' of melted fat!!) and Goa(n) sausage - not like any other suasage I've seen, been a set of approximately one inch in diameter 'beads' of meat and spices wrapped in dried crackly 'skin' all held together by string (and you throw away the skin and string when you cook it). Recommended that these dishes be eaten with rice, a glass of cashew feni on the side (remember that every bodily juice will stink of this liquor for the next week)*, and followed up by the heavy, multi-layered unleavened cake called Bebinca (usually pronounced bay-bee(n)k). 2. vin duh-loo Dish native to the UK, based upon the famous indigenous 'curry' cuisine which uses Indian names and a well-graded system of 'spiciness' to rank curries from mild through medium to hot. Vindaloo, along with Madras, is one of the hottest curries available on the standard curry scale. The curry industry is run primarily by immigrants from Bangladesh, and appears to consist of the creation of: a. Sauce number 1 - orange, thick, mild, made primarily of tomatoes b. Meat selection - diced lamb, chicken (pork for something exotic) c. Style selection - chooped onions for 'dupiaza' dishes, melted butter for 'makhni' etc. And a 'quickspice' attachment, no doubt, to bring the dish up to strength on the scale. Vindaloo is by way of being the national dish of Britain. Forget all you're heard of rosbif, or fish'n'chips in newspepr, recent surveys have shown that curry is without question the most popular cuisine in terms of restaurant numbers and restaurant visits/take-out orders, with vindaloo being the most popular curry strength. Now let's see the French say that English cooking has no flavour - we've got more than 7 distinct strengths of curry. So there! cheer the sunshine warrior *Actually, though fenni is the native Goan liquor, it is foul. I recommend, rather, a cold bottled beer (nice, big 650 ml bottles in India), and if you're in a beach shack, do not feel ashamed to ask them to put ice in your beer. It'll hardly dilute the strength, since you'll be drinking it so quickly, but it will help keep it cool.

Many thanks, Shanks, for the straight dope on real Vindaloo. In this part of the world, Indian cuisine was virtually unknown 20 years ago but is now beoming quite popular, along with Thai cuisine. Vindaloo is always "lamb vindaloo". As prepared at our local Indian restaurants, it's chunks of lean lamb in a brown sauce, very hot with a complex blend of spices.

Serendipitously I have learned never to order it ...
In my youth I could eat nails and spit battleships but, alas, those days are gone.
Age Hath It's Privileges (AHIP) but spicey food is not one of them.
