Clicking on the doodle will take you to a search results page, with - what else? - Google as the top result. Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They originally called the new search engine "BackRub." Eventually, changing the name to Google, originating from a misspelling of the word "googol." the number one followed by 100 zeros. I cant imagine Backrub ever being as catchy!
