Never assume anything. I just now realized that Arthur Sullivan's Strephon (Iolanthe), an "Arcadian shepherd," had a Classical origin.

Moving right along (but not too far) -

I cant find anything......though I have enjoyed an evening of reading about Iolanthe and Arcadian shepherds.

Google has something to say about everything

This one’s about Arcadia, from the sixteenth century.

And this one seems to be a previous incarnation of Strephon the Arcadian shepherd, done by Gilbert & Someoneelse ten years before Iolanthe.

"Strephon" means "lover"? Or was I just skimming too fast?

From Iolanthe -

STREPHON: A shepherd I -
ALL: A shepherd he!
S. Of Arcady -
ALL: Of Arcadee!
S. Betrothed are we!
ALL: Betrothed are they -
S. And mean to be -
ALL: Espoused to-day!

.....as did I.
But we may have hit another impasse.
