Could anyone get Garborg's quotation (AWAD 24/02/2010) in its original language (norwegian, I guess)? I'd like to translate it to my mother tongue, catalan.

Gràcies.

Om pengar
Arne Garborg

For pengar kan ein få alt, heiter det.
– Nei, ein kan ikkje det.
Ein kan kjøpa seg
mat, men ikkje mathug,
dropar, men ikkje helse,
mjuke senger, men ikkje svevn,
lærdom, men ikkje vit,
stas, men ikkje venleik,
glans, men ikkje hygge,
moro, men ikkje glede,
kameratar, men ikkje venskap,
tenarar, men ikkje truskap,
gråe hår, men ikkje ære,
rolege dagar, men ikkje fred.
Skalet av alle ting kan ein få for pengar.
Men ikkje kjernen;
den er ikkje for pengar fal.

wordguess?

It was interesting to read that Garborg was a proponent of Landsmål (today called Nynorsk) instead of Bokomål as the literary Norwegian language. (That's right, Norway has two competing standard languages.) When I looked on the Norwegikan Wikipedia to see if the quotation was there, of course I went to the wrong version (the Nynorsk one). Too funny. Maybe I should try to translate it into Esperanto, Ido, or Volapük to tickle the wrath of the Esperantista in the other thread with his Google Alerts.

Pengar, no doubt, is cognate with penny. I know a little Danish, and ikkje just looks wrong. wink It should be ikke.

Are you suggesting Wikipedia is unsafe in any language?

Nope. I was just saying that ikkje looks wrong. I'm sure it's right. And, FTR, I got the Garborg quotation off another non-Wikipedian quarter of the Web.

[Fixed transposition of two letters.]

smile jaja.. ikkje looked a bitty weird. I know some travel Danish and there it was ikke. But I trusted Norwegian would be different with all those shifting phonologies.So.. ( I took the Norwegian interface) ikkje is right also in Nynorsk. For a noun I would feel perfectly at home with it, but it ain't.
