Must be the cold here in the midwest: cannot find the word of the day to be discussed: GOLCONDA: at any rate: nice picture, and I always wanted to learn the Marathi language.

Golconda is a small locality about ten miles from here, at Latitude 41° 10' 0 S, Longitude: 147 ° 18' 0 E.

I have no idea why it's called that.

Could be named after the place in India (link, as Anu suggests), like the other Golcondas (e.g., the one in Nevada). Famous for its diamonds.

Greetings to you in Tasmania. Golconda there too?
I was simply replying to Anu (who is in India) and his word for the day. Interesting you have one there too.

GOLCONDA
maybe we need someone, i.e. Jackie, to as Anu to check into its
etymology. If there is one in Tasmania, and another in Nevada,
could be curious.

>as[k] Anu to check into its etymology

I think his resources are no better than yours; i.e., Google, Google[books], wikipedia, etc.

for instance, from wiki..
"Golconda is a town in the state of Nevada, USA, named after the ancient diamond-mining center of Golkonda in India." note the purported spelling variation. link

Thanks for the heads up! Less than 2 years at this reminds me
that I have lots to learn vs 8881 posts. Wow.
I referred to this Anu person, because, as I understand it, he
started this site, and thought "he knew everything".
But also because he is in India, currently, and thought he might
have run across it somewhere in his travels.
Thanks.

even assuming all this, Anu very seldom posts here, with the occasional exception up in Information and announcements.

If you'd like to address him personally, try using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page.

I am very appreciative. Don't particularly want to contact him,
was just assuming this weeks' words were sort of, from him,
since he is in India. Thanks.

I think you misunderstand me; Anu certainly does, personally, provide the daily word (unless he has a guest for the week) -- but he doesn't come here to discuss them. he does do some follow up based on emails he gets from his subscribers.

I did misunderstand. He provides the word, wherein I thought
he might have access to the meaning of the word in the local
language. Thanks.

And I see his emails are published in the letter sent today
regarding the words of the week. I see Golconda was discussed
at length. Thanks again tsuwm
