plus from what I've seen here and other forums it seems as if Australians and New Zealanders expect to insult each other and tobe insulted by each other. I don't understand why, but that is how it comes across.

I agree completely! Said the "hillbilly" who has only ever been in the foothills of Appalachia...once. But--since I've been insulted, I reckon I'm now in the "in crowd"!
