Was it "gadfly"? I can't find that usage in any of the online dictionaries - or any other similar usage. Anything small enough to carry. Human jackdaws do the same and are known for their fashion and decorating motto's of "more is the new more" and "if you can't buy quality, buy a cheap imitation". The term packrat is similar but they collect everything; like the woman who kept a neatly labelled box marked "pieces of string too short to save".
