I seem to remember a recent thread concerning playing marbles/aggies/mibs

But being an old non-pc fumbler completely out of Bill Gates' world I am completely unable to bring it up by WS' search algorithm

Is that because I've got the wrong site or because our search algorithm doesn't go to the archive

If the former, please forgive me--Thanks for all present and future help

Dale, I'd like to reiterate others' requests that you confine all your "algorithm" questions to a single thread? Thanks.

I did a search using the word <aggies> as the key since it's so unusual (like "for"!) and set the parameters to seach all forums and over the timeframe of the last year. It can still sometimes be frustrating, but a good lead like that word helps, normally.

I didn't see this really as an algorithm issue.

> issue

Me neither - we've all sprung queries like this at some point. If wanting to be punctillious, perhaps a forum other than Q&A about words might be ideal but.

mav: I did try "aggies" as well as other terms from that thread. I tried it in all three boxes with no luck whatsoever. There's something about the WS search (insert your own noun here) that works differently from Google and other search facilities that as an old, decrepit non-geek I guess I shall never fathom

the trick to the search here at WS, is that you need to specify when.

Date Range
Maximum date range is 5 years.

Newer than X
Older than X

Eta: Aha thank you

As it turns out, there are two different search pages. One of these pages requires you enter the date range but the other does not. One never knows which one he will get when he clicks on the Search link. I always get the wrong one

Forgive an old non-geek stumblebum not familiar with the labyrinth of Bill Gates and his elves

Em--to repeat myself, nearly:

Um--a word, just in case there are some people who haven't realized this: the Search in this line About Us | What's New | Search | Site Map | Contact Us is for the Word A Day section.

The Search in this line Control Panel · My Home · Main Index · Search · Active Topics
is for this discussion board.

When you use the second one, you should get either that nothing was found, or a list of posts that contain that word or phrase. I've never gotten anything else. I will say that I have never checked the Show a preview of post body with results. option--perhaps that would help?

Jackie thank you for the rundown; one of these days I'll catch on to it all
Perhaps when I'm 97
