Ok, I'm lost. Are you saying that people who sign up for the New York Times are like us? If so, how, please? Must admit to a speck of disappointment--from the subject title, I thought your thread was going to be about aliens! (The extra-terrestrial kind, that is.)

Jackie sez: "Ok, I'm lost. Are you saying that people who sign up for the New York Times are like us? If so, how, please?
And the Vicar explains: Here are a bunch of people who argue over whether "retronym" is an appropriate neologism, given that its head is Latin while its tail is Greek. One cites an 1881 usage from the OED. Another quotes William Safire.
Honey, we're home. These are OUR PEOPLE.

Their "forum" seems to be too structured and straight-forward. Ours resembles our language: it's mutable and can go off on wild tangents. I'm sure some of them would love to join us if someone were to invite them over here. . .

Well, i'll check it out padre-- but the NYTimes "abuzz" is a a bust-- and I am a NYTimes addict-- with out my times and crossword puzzle-- the day is nothing--
Yes jackie-- if as part of our profile, we are NYTimes people, we can also be Awads-- but i am quickly moving to valuing being an AWAD better than a times addict-- it moved ahead of the Times on my shortcut bar--and its the first thing i check elelectonicly-- but i do work on my crossword as i commute to work....(finished it today already)..
I just reread that -- and the tone is all wrong-- I sound cross-- and meant to sound playful! but it is true--AWAD had edged out NYTimes in bookmark status..

I've had a couple of trawls through the abuzz site - it just "feels" wrong for me. There's nothing actually wrong with it at all, and I apologise to all if I gave that impression.
I've been in and out of various boards on various subjects, and AWAD is the only one where the backbiting, name-calling and general spite and acrimonious behaviour are largely absent, and are jumped on very quickly if they rear their ugly heads ...
AWAD also has one of the widest ranges of experiential, occupational and educational backgrounds among its denizens.
As I say, nothing wrong with abuzz - it just doesn't feel right!
