I didn't get Monday's AWAD. This has happened before, and eventually the missing email turns up, but it could be a day late or a week late or months late. It's not only from AWAD either. It's also happened with the normally reliable connection between home and work. Can the more computerate amongst us explain why, and what if anything I can do about it?

Bingley

I guess I'm probably the "most" computer literate person currently active on the board. They pay me to be computer literate, anyway. And I actually wrote an email program, back in the days of DOS.

Having said that, no, I have no idea why one or two emails, rather than all of them, don't arrive where they should. If they didn't turn up at all, I'd say that there was an unresolvable address issue, which happens sometimes even when the address is correct for some reason best explained by the programmers who wrote the your email program, the ISP's email server and the sender's email program (if different to yours). But for them to "disappear" and then "reappear" a considerable time later - there will be a good technical explanation, but you should talk to your ISP, especially if they are disappearing between work and home and you have access to the ISP.

I know this doesn't help!

Hi Bingley,
While I am not of the paranoid type in general, it occurs to me that your line traffic might be occasionally scrutinized by some officials of the state who are ๎ntent on protecting it from unwanted information? I think technically it would be no problem.

C.K., you said "different to...".
I say different from.
And by the way, I for one don't want you to "shut up for a while".

are you modest too? Many on this board seem to be quite computer literate...(look at all the help that was offered to Rhu-- and just running comments make it obvious to me, many here know a good deal.
I had my first home computer back in 1982-- before DOS-(well actually there was QDOS- the quick and dirty OS, that was in US public domain software, that is the basis for MS DOS. )
I learned assembly language for the 8086-- by signal tracing on a 1meter square chip "Map" put out by Sams, a big name in electronic publishing. (the map showed the JK/flip flops, and gates, nor, gates-- and you could "signal trace" a High through the chip-- and compute the output..
at the time i was a high school drop out-- staying home with kids, and did this to keep from getting bored. I have electic knowledge-- Most of my work is as a trainer-- and I do well since i can speak to the geeks, understand them, and the "translate" to the luddites. I know binary, octal and Hex-- and can even do simple problems (say adding a list of 10 binary numbers) on paper-- with out first translating to decimal.. or multiplication-- again on paper. for division i need at least one number in decimal formate-- and lest yout think that is insane, the ancient Egyptians used "binary" for division.

that said-- I have also had a problem this week, and at 9:30 EST, still do not have my WOTD-- I didn't it till noon on monday. Network traffic can cause unexpected delays.. and IP traffic can interfer. high bandwidth messages (MP3 file, ie, get priority routing..)

For fun, find out if your email service offer a trace function and send out an email with a trace attached.

Of troy, I think C.K. was merely stating a supposition, based on the information that he had. There are times when what might sound like bragging is merely a statement of fact.

As has been pointed out to me by one in the know, there are many different ways of being knowledgeable about these complicated instruments. There is a person here who crafts
3-D models that must be absolutely perfect. I admire all kinds of expertise, and somehow don't think one kind is
necessarily better than another.

I installed a system written in CP/M - bet you don't remember that - our advisers thought DOS was a bit of a flash in the pan!
