#133267 - 09/21/04 07:15 AM prescriptivism run amok?
from the Guardian:
"It was, perhaps, an unwise thing to say to the great and good of the Spanish language, but when the Colombian Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez suggested spelling ought to be scrapped, he did not expect to become a pariah."

The funny thing about this is that Spanish orthography is rather simple and makes sense phonologically. But, Languagehat's observation about what the grammar police would do once they got a taste of power is spot on. Issue Strunk & White to the masses and place descriptivists in distant camps where they cannot corrupt the youth in their grammar. Piffle!
