Many thanks for the boost to my already-inflated ego, wordmatters - and thanks for reminding me of the Chinese, who were, as you hint, absolute masters of sumptuary laws; even better than the Russians (who almost certainly learnt about them from the Mongols!)

Were they the ones who started Horde and Taylor's?

Yep, TEd. Originally, there were three partners, but Moise Golden took his money out to start manufacturing bathroom equipment.

Though he actually used some of the money from the partnership dissolution to study ancient Egyptian plumbing systems, truly a Pharaoh faucet major.

Only then did he decide to sink his money into the plumbing business. Money came to him in showers, and he ended up with tubs full of it. Flush with success, he went of to Scotland to learn the pipes. When last heard from he had become a sewer of wild oats. Unforunately this drained him of money to the point where he could not even speculate in the commode-ity markets. No one knows for sure, but there is some speculation he died in service as a lavoratory mouse.

Talking Toilet Orders Men to Sit Down

May 20, 8:24 am ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German inventor who developed a gadget that berates men if they try to use the toilet standing up has sold more than 1.6 million devices, his business manager said on Tuesday.

German women fed up with a man with a poor aim can turn to the ghost-shaped gadget, which lurks under the toilet rim and, if the seat is lifted, declares in a stern female tone:

"Hello, what are you up to then? Put the seat back down right away, you are definitely not to pee standing up ... you will make a right mess..."

Alex Benkhardt, 46, invented the "WC Ghost" and its creators are in negotiations to market it in Britain, Canada and Italy.
