Der Quibblemeister says Def.1 is in error. How can you
renew something until after it has been started?

Looking at the etymology it looks like def 2 is the one in error.

NOUN: 1. Renovation; restoration. 2. The institution or establishment of something.
ETYMOLOGY: Latin nstaurti, nstaurtin-, from nstaurtus, past participle of nstaurre, to renew. See st- in Appendix I.
