wwh Carpal Tunnel Registered: 01/18/01 Posts: 13858	From a glossary about armour I found in Carolyn's Corner: Aiguilette: Literally "point of a shield," the small metal end that was capped onto a lacing point in order to keep it from fraying. Also called aglet, aiglet, anglet. We've had posts about "aglet" the metal tip on a shoe lace, but no mention of its origin.

jheem veteran Registered: 01/06/04 Posts: 1474 Loc: California	It's interesting how aiguillette went from a word for the part to a word for the whole: aiguilettes are now the cords (tipped with aglets) that some soldiers wear on their uniforms. From the Late Latin acicula, acucula 'ornamental pin'. Which reminds me of the Latin for safety pin: fibula.
