I meant to list this one earlier: lights 'the lungs of an animal slaughtered for food' (A-H). I ran across it in the novel Mottke the Thief by Sholem Asch (translated by the Muirs). The chapter it was used in takes place in a slaughterhouse, and one of the young hooligans is throwing lights to the pack of semi-feral dogs that hang around the place. Anyway, so called because the lungs are lighter than other organs.

And ballpark hotdogs have not only the lights, but all the
rest of the offal few of us would knowingly purchase.

In a time too far ago to be connected to this age, best beloved, my grandmother would buy lights from the Co-op butcher to feed her cat. Sometimes she bought whiting.

The smell of lights cooking would drive people out of the house.

Gives a whole new meaning to "some light refreshments" being served ;)

I cooked some lights for my dog, Frito, once. He wasn't impressed and neither was I. Lights out.

In many places now you can get Hebrew National or other kosher hot dogs.
