This morning it was colder than usual. Trying think of medical words associated with exposure to cold, I remembered chillblain. I found that it had been discussed,
but not its etymology. In looking for that, I found a word
new to me:

kibe

PRONUNCIATION: kb
NOUN: A chapped or inflamed area on the skin, especially on the heel, resulting from exposure to cold; an ulcerated chillblain.
ETYMOLOGY: Middle English kybe.

There is an excellent Arab dish called "kibe" that some friends of my parents would make. It is also called a "torpedo" and we would scarf them down like crazy whenever Mrs. Kassin would bring us a plateful. The shell was cracked wheat molded around a spiced ground beef mixture with piņon nuts and deep fried in oil.
*sigh* [wish I had some now-e]

I googled around and see that an alternate spelling is quibe and that it's usually described as a Brazilian dish. I assume that as opposed to the English kibe /'kajb/, this kibe is pronounced /'kibe/. Sounds scrumpsh.
