I have watched the Olympics on TV, but never heard this mentioned: Halma Hal"ma (?), n. [NL., fr. Gr. , fr. to leap.] (Greek Antiq.) The long jump, with weights in the hands, -- the most important of the exercises of the Pentathlon.

Hence, presumably, the name of the board game, since the pieces "leap" over each other.

Speaking of board games, does anyone here have the Scrabble dictionary? Is a word as rare as halma included in it? I really am going to order the Scrabble dictionary because I wonder so often which words have been excluded. May do so today since we have still another ice day--at least ice on the roads day off from school.

From a Maryland college newsletter: "At the 8th international conference of the European Committee for Sport History in Olympia, Greece, September 27 Hugh Lee will present a paper entitled “Gilbert West and the Revival of the Olympic Ideal”; he will also preside over a paper session the preceding day. A week later—on October 4—he will speak on “The Halma: A Standing or Running Jump” at a conference entitled “Onward to the Olympics. "
