Posts: 13858 I encountered this word in an archaeology site, describing
the vertical timbers in a very early dwelling. It reminded me of the early biplanes that had two strong vertical members at each wingtip. I was a bit surprised that AHD did not mention the aircraft word.

EDIT: Maybe that second noun definition points to both the automotive and the aviation usages...

Loc: Caribbean Prolly right, FB. I know (from paying for them) that shocks and struts go together (or sumpin' like that) to keep the car stable whilst running down the road.
