Not many definitions submitted for this round.

a. the practice of removing spikes, as from garden plants.

b. the act of removing a deacon or sexton from office

c. marriage custom found in certain African and Pacific tribes where the preferred wife for a man is his mother's brother's daughter

d. the practice of divining the future by examining the entrails of sacrificed animals.

e. n. in time of war, leadership by a government-in-exile

f. the altered mental condition induced by hallucinogens.

Definitions were submitted by AnnaS, bingley, flatlander, maahey, sjmaxq, wofahulicodoc. The sharp-eyed amongst you will have noticed that there are six definitions and six entrants. One definition was so close to the true definition that I have amalgamated the two.

D...only because sacrificed animal entrails are easier to amalgamate than most things, eh, Bingley?

I say "B", too.

BINGO!!!

------------

FWIW - I would have submitted "The momentary lack of or interruption in speech due to a distraction".
Does anyone have a *real word for this?

A very noisy vote, this one, nothing but decibels.

I'll contribute another d.

Now - making a wordpost of this - why doesn't it end in "-acy"? Most government forms (democracy, aristocracy), or other practices of variable nefariosity (diplomacy, indelicacy, lunacy), end in -acy. The only words I can think of offhand that verge on having an -icy suffix are hypocrisy and apostasy, and those are close-but-no-cigar, even if some think they may be thematically related...
