Loc: Seattle, Washington, USA How, pray tell, did Mount Parnassus end up being called Liakoura?
And is there a word to describe what happens when a proper placename changes? I'm thinking that I grew up knowing about Mount McKinley which is now frequently called "Denali." What is the name for the process by which a placename loses its place to another? Or have I got that backwards?

Well, that is exactly tyhe situation Fr. Steve is talking about. Denali was renamed McKinley, then renamed back again.

Loc: Louisville, Kentucky This is almost more in keeping with the other thread, but. Check the spelling on this, which seems to have been translated from Greek: "Mount Parnassos Map and Guide".
Here is something else which I believe has been translated, and that may shed a bit of light on your question, Father Steve: It is worthy to follow the charming route through the full of fir trees Parnassos to Arachova (24km.) or its peak (Liakoura) to see the sun rising...

Loc: Seattle, Washington, USA "Amongst region's sightseeing: the several country chapels, the picturesque springs (in particular "Manna"), "Elatos" "Finnish" village which is made of wood, the National Park of Parnassos, the sacred cave of Panas and the Nymphes "Korikeion Andron", Eptastomos (bottomless cesspool) and, finally, the Parnassos Ski Centre."
The bottomless cesspool? A tourist attraction!?

Loc: this too shall pass >The bottomless cesspool?
there seems to be some foetid fascination with this sort of thing; to wit, my home town had the Will Rogers Memorial Sewage Lagoon...
