From today's New York Times:

ChevronTexaco announced yesterday that it would withdraw its support from the Metropolitan Opera's Saturday afternoon live radio broadcasts after the 2003-4 season, ending the longest continuous commercial sponsorship in broadcast history.

Joseph Volpe, general manager of the Met, said that he was determined to continue the broadcasts without ChevronTexaco and that he would look for a new sponsor.

(registration required; if you don't like registering, just google Texaco Opera and you'll find a bunch of other stories)

Now then. Let's suppose the Met decides to have a different sponsor for each opera. What would be some appropriate sponsors?

To start off:

"The Magic Flute," brought to you by Grand Masonic Lodge No.146, Hoboken, New Jersey.

"La Traviata," brought to you by Robitussin cough syrup.

Oh, saturday won't be the same!
"Texico, star of the american road , is proud to present, live from Lincoln Center, in the heart of New York, the Metropolitan Opera's production of ....."

(ya think maybe i've listened to the show once or twice?)
their sponsership was very low key.. (you never heard their jingle, "you can trust your car to, the man who wears the star too, the big red star Texico Star!", just nice, low key ads.

This got me thinking (a dangerous precedent). Maybe the Sierra Club could take over and work it around a campaign to save the screech owl.

Aren't most of the remaining screech owls being paid to be on the stage? Sounds like it to me, anyway.

Presently it is http://www.takeourword.com/current/page1.html but it's the spotlight of the week so it will probably be http://www.takeourword.com/TOW184/page1.html eventually. This latter link won't work just yet, but maybe tomorrow…

But, how could it be an opera? The baritone's the hero and the tenor's the villain.

Nemmine that's the way it *should be. It ain't the opera way!
