Like, yet unlike. Not my scene, I'm afraid!

Ok, I'm lost. Are you saying that people who sign up for the New York Times are like us? If so, how, please?

Must admit to a speck of disappointment--from the subject title, I thought your thread was going to be about aliens!
(The extra-terrestrial kind, that is.)

Jackie sez: "Ok, I'm lost. Are you saying that people who sign up for the New York Times are like us? If so, how, please?

And the Vicar explains: Here are a bunch of people who argue over whether "retronym" is an appropriate neologism, given that its head is Latin while its tail is Greek. One cites an 1881 usage from the OED. Another quotes William Safire.

Honey, we're home. These are OUR PEOPLE.

Sorry Father Steve, Agree with Capital Kiwi. From the excerpt I got impression they take themselves very seriously. Something we could never be accused of
I like to think of language as fun!

Their "forum" seems to be too structured and straight-forward. Ours resembles our language: it's mutable and can go off on wild tangents. I'm sure some of them would love to join us if someone were to invite them over here. . .

Well, i'll check it out padre-- but the NYTimes "abuzz" is a a bust-- and I am a NYTimes addict-- with out my times and crossword puzzle-- the day is nothing--

Yes jackie-- if as part of our profile, we are NYTimes people, we can also be Awads-- but i am quickly moving to valuing being an AWAD better than a times addict-- it moved ahead of the Times on my shortcut bar--and its the first thing i check elelectonicly-- but i do work on my crossword as i commute to work....(finished it today already)..

I just reread that -- and the tone is all wrong-- I sound cross-- and meant to sound playful! but it is true--AWAD had edged out NYTimes in bookmark status..

Posted By: Capital Kiwi Re: We Are Not Alone - 01/02/01 05:11 PM
I've had a couple of trawls through the abuzz site - it just "feels" wrong for me. There's nothing actually wrong with it at all, and I apologise to all if I gave that impression.

I've been in and out of various boards on various subjects, and AWAD is the only one where the backbiting, name-calling and general spite and acrimonious behaviour are largely absent, and are jumped on very quickly if they rear their ugly heads ...

AWAD also has one of the widest ranges of experiential, occupational and educational backgrounds among its denizens.

As I say, nothing wrong with abuzz - it just doesn't feel right!

Personally I find abuzz lightyears behind!

What I meant was that the people who post to H-Net in the "intellectual history" strand of that list-serve are very much like us, AWADers, in that we are both interested in words. I must have expressed this notion very poorly to have so few understand and so many misunderstand. Alas. The article for which I provided a URL was all about this H-Net chat, and gave examples which were hauntingly like out own patter. Hmmm. Don't recall endorsing the NY Times any more than one who comments on the quality of the gravy is endorsing the boat in which it is served.

Padre, your style and interests remind me very much of another celebrated Episcopal priest, the incomparable Fr. Robert F. Capon, author of one of my favorite books, The Supper of the Lamb. Are your sure you're not a doppelgänger or alternate e-comm identity?

I am deeply honoured to be, in any way -- literary, culinary or spiritual -- to be compared with Robert. I had the great privilege of hosting him and his lovely bride for supper a few years back (and of sharing some really great cigars afterwards) and found him (them) to be as intersting, engaging, witty, bright, soulful, funny, learned and warm in person as he is in print. Thanks for what I take to be a great compliment.

"Its head is Latin while its tail is Greek."

I suppose then you could say that "retronym" is a chimeric neologism. It seems perfectly fair to me to allow mixing of Greek and Latin words, but I think it's against the law in Alabama. ;)

"Its head is Latin while its tail is Greek."

bicycle is OK because its second element has been laundered through Latin?

Sounds like somebody laundered money and made cents to me.

Shhh! Only mention the word very, very quietly. We may be inviting a deluge from the great slippery cyclist in our midst ... [creeping away carefully emoticon]

Maybe no one else has noticed, but he doesn't seem to be in our midst anymore, either that or he's gone mute.

JazzO mentioned Maybe no one else has noticed, but he doesn't seem to be in our midst anymore, either that or he's gone mute.

I had noticed. I keep hoping that his absence is only temporary, imposed by the demands of "real life."

Yeah - I am wondering too - where is the fish?

Posted By: Capital Kiwi Re: bicycle - 01/12/01 04:49 AM
Let's hope the Japanese long-liners haven't got him!

Yes, I sent Shona a note. He's had to up his work rate so he can keep his family from the bread line. Poor sole![sympathy emoticon]

Poor sole!

Ow, Jo, ouch! I think I've had my fill, et tu?
But isn't it neat, how people here care for one another?
