I swear you said IPA with sudds... didn't he Pfranz?

It's too late... the power of suggestion...

Well, that's really good, eta. I had some of that "voiced velar fricative" stuff in college. But I think this is going to be more complicated than I'm going to want to fool with, learning all those curlicues and all. I enjoyed learning a couple of new words: pulmonic and apical. One of the terms made me grin: "Creaky voiced". If I wanted to undertake a study intensive enough to learn all of these, I think I'd need to hear them, so I could associate the sound with its correct symbol.

well, it will make it wasier®(way easier?) for us to define a particular sound. we could link to a sound page; no confusion about what is that sound?
worth a try...

And sconn is pronounced…?

And sconn is pronounced…?

Beats me.

And sconn is pronounced…?

I would use this vowel sound:

or if scone:

I love this, eta. Good work!

Awk--clicking on your links, eta, makes my windows media player open, but it opens with a little blue box that tells me it has already reached the end of the file.

hmmm. is there a way to see if WMP is set to play .mp3? I'm afraid I won't be much help when it comes to pc's... [sad]
these are very tiny files, is your volume up? can you hit replay, or play? I don't think you're ignorant, but sometimes it's the obvious things that are the culprit!
hopefully one of our pc savvy people will chime in!

WMP version 7 will do it!

Posted By: Buffalo Shrdlu Re: I found it! IPA with sounds! - 03/04/03 10:25 PM
mp3s just play automagically for me in Mozilla, so I hadn't thought about other peoples browser issues... sorry...

Posted By: Jackie Re: I found it! IPA with sounds! - 03/05/03 12:02 AM
automagically I love it! By the way, I went to the grocery today and bought some Vermont cheese, thinking of you; it better be good!

Musick, thank you. I just checked. "About WMP" tells me I have Version 9.0.

well, I wish I could take credit for automagically, but I picked it up on another forum somewheres....

didja buy Cabot? that's the best. I don't go for the strong cheddars, I prefer a milder cheese; the Monterey Jack is great, and the pepperjack or jalapeño cheddar are very yum!
enjoy!

White cheddar, my Dear. Didn't see any pepper jack, or I'd have bought that (I did buy the store brand!).

I played around with the vowel sounds, and couldn't find one that sounds like the vowel I would make in scone (skonn).

I'm sure this is well known to the carpals, but this may come in handy:

http://www.quinion.com/words/pronguide.htm

as long as people can figure out how to use the particular character, maybe this will help.

Oh, hey--thanks, eta! That one I can understand. That IPA is Greek to me. But D is th, I can follow.

Just so long as you pronounce the sample words the way you're supposed to…
