someone searched wwftd last week for eumelanica. the only English site which shows for this via google is Uncle Jazzbeau's Gallimaufry, which uses verba eumelanica as an epigraph(?). translation please?

eu : well
melas, ~anos : black

So presumably 'Very dark language' would be a colloquial stab at it? And it would be a suitably bastardised Leek au Gratin dish

exit DSL, awaiting the classical whordes ;)

so you have to post Questions under Misc to get an answer round here, huh, grumble grumble grumble...

According to my Liddel and Scott, eumelanikos, well blackened, inky.

Leek au Gratin

I love it! Mind if I use it sometime?

Feel free - treat it as a Welsh loanword ;)

here then is the link; the cast of characters is quite familiar, and I've been there before -- but I never noticed the topic header. from the context I guess that jheem meant something like "obscure words".

Where then?

Considering the meaning of eumelanikos I'd suggest he knew what he was saying when he said, "I succumbed to the chance to brush up on inkhorn words."
