I'll offer up part of the latest E-mail from http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/ for something to talk about:

A piece of jargon we hadn't heard before, but quite like, is "tyre-kicker", a salesmen's phrase for the type of gullible customer who would feign expertise by kicking the tyres of a second-hand car to test its quality.

"Tire-kicker" is a very common expression among USns. Is this indeed new to y'all Brits?

Oh, and here's a query on rhyming slang:

...Some of the celebrity-based rhyming slang sounded extremely dubious. We'd love to know if any readers have ever heard phrases such as "Nelson Mandela" for "a pint of Stella" [Artois, a lager], "Colonel Gaddafi" for a café, or "Kat Slater" (a British soap-opera character) for "catch you later".

"tyre-kicker"--argh, why didn't they spell tire right?? And apparently they spell furor with an e on the end, which to me sends the word into a 3-syllable pronunciation like curare. Why do they do this?!? Could it be because..
THEY'VE GOT BLINDERS ON!? :-/

{sorry about that outburst; lost control there for a second.}

Do you have ANY idea how expensive tyres are on a Furore?

Tyre-kickers oughtn't to be confused with R-biters.

R-biters: the rhotically-challenged?

Oh dear, are we going to be invaded now to protect us from the insurgents who insist upon retaining their fundamentalist approach to the language?

Sorry, couldn't help myself either...:-P (you know I really love all the USsians I know)

Tire-kickers oughtn't to be confused with R-biters. Arbiters?

Hmmm...is that a bit like saying "some of my best friends are Brits"?

No. Love can be a one way flow. Best friends flow both ways.
