I'm creating a students' rights webpage offering practical (and sensible) advice about school councils, organising petitions, youth activities etc. but I'm stuck for a name, any suggestions would be greatly aprieciated, thanks!

Posted By: wwh Re: Suggestions? - 01/27/03 06:15 PM
Since when do students have rights? I never had any, so why should kids now have any?

Posted By: Faldage Re: Suggestions? - 01/27/03 06:21 PM
How about anticurmudgeon.com? It doesn't seem to be taken.

Posted By: bonzaialsatian Re: Suggestions? - 01/27/03 06:24 PM
wwh: Huh!
Faldage: Huh?

NOTE: Not helpful... I was thinking of some kinda acronym or something catchy. Oh yeah, perhaps rights wasn't exactly the best term to use now since it's associated with all that radicalism and anarchism etc.
Posted By: Faldage Re: Suggestions? - 01/27/03 06:28 PM
Oh, that was just a little apprentice curmudgeon's comment on Dr Bill's little rant.

"By tunket, we din't never have none o them fancy computer things when I was kid! I don' see why nobody should have them nowadays."

Posted By: bonzaialsatian Re: Suggestions? - 01/27/03 06:38 PM
Talk about not living out your childhood dreams through your kids!
Ok, ok, I know your childhood dream may not have been giving advice to other's on how to change the school and you probably didn't go by the motto 'be heard or be herded', but.

Posted By: Faldage Re: Youthinc - 01/27/03 07:47 PM
It's not taken. I like the double meaning.

Posted By: bonzaialsatian Re: Youthinc - 01/27/03 08:39 PM
Hmmm, I like that idea as well, I'll design a logo for each (leadtheheard and youthinc) and see which one comes out better.
Thanks!

Why "heard"? [slow on the uptake e]

Posted By: Buffalo Shrdlu Re: Youthinc - 01/28/03 10:28 AM
Why "heard"?

well, if you're getting heard, you're probably making a difference, so if you are leading the "heard", then you're probably making the most difference.

and now I realize you're probably talking about the word form, rather than the phrase in question, because as I look at the word "heard", it looks pretty bizarre...

Posted By: wow Re: Suggestions? - 01/28/03 03:08 PM
Some interesting and clever suggestions so far. However, being a very straight forward thinker, I would not go looking for the info you wish to promulgate under those headings.
If I was a student and went on a search, I would tend to go straight for the most simple address ike "studentrights.com"

Prosaic but...

Posted By: bonzaialsatian Re: Suggestions? - 01/28/03 04:51 PM
Perhaps, but rights just seems so much of a strong word for some reason - kinda associated with rather radical, 'let's bring down the system' sort of thinking... I dunno.

Posted By: Capfka Re: Suggestions? - 01/29/03 06:06 AM
So you want to assert students' rights, but you don't want to upset anyone in the process? Hell, things have changed since I was at school ...

don't want to upset anyone in the process
If one of the key aims involved is to get authorities to even think about trusting the opinions of young people, then to go about upsetting anyone would be counter-productive as it will just enforce some peoples' opinions that young people cannot be sensible, compromising and realistic, with thier campaigns lost in some rather idealitic dream.
The best way to be taken seriously is to be reasonable and inoffensive - especially where it's least expected!

How do you know you're not? You want to start a students' rights website, well the oldies are just going to assume you are a neo-Marxist in socialist's clothing. That's got to be worth at least three chemical warheads (filled with sulphur dioxide) and half a teaspoon of smelly plutonium carefully gathered from a cyclotron hidden up a camel's rectum.

You are a positive danger to society, and you ought to be locked away.

I dunno what the world's coming to, I really don't. What is all this crap about students having rights anyway? They have wrongs, and even those are doled out with care, only to the most deserving cases, preferably to those students who are quadraplegics.

Bet you turn up to classes, too. Now there's something that's highly suspicious!

Like I said:
Erk! How do I respond to that??
Though like the other thing I said, 'rights' wasn't the the best word, I know that a school can never be a democracy - it wouldn't work, but... well, they can't ignore us!! I mean, I sometimes feel that students are a bit more capable of independant thought than some people give credit for. Anyway, part of the reason there is so much voter apathy seems to be the loss of faith among young people that their ideas can make a difference.

No offense bonzaialsatian, but don'tcha think that your other peers would sooner visit an anti-establishment site like...

jazzrumblers.org

or

deathtofalsemetal.com

You could then give them your unhip messages about pratical matters after you've got them hooked.

You mean there's a cure???

Naw, it's like docs everywhere do: It's relabelled as something else, and that turns out to be incurable instead. Such as the move from RSI to OOS. Sounds better, I guess. And the original stops turning up in the "We dunno how to fix that" stats.

I haven't actually seen any sites with practical, more workable advice on the students' rights/freedom/speakandbeheard/tryingtostayinoffensive issue - how'd I know it'd work or not 'till it's been tried? Anyway, it seems like a lot the people who go on the really extremist-seeming sites are either not really serious about change and just wanna seem cool, or have an interesting record of teacher assault and exclusions. (Note I didn't say all)

Posted By: smarterthanu Re: Suggestions? - 02/02/03 05:43 AM
Well, thanks for sharing your opinion, I think! He asked for a name suggestion, not how you felt. You could have at least given him a name. Just because you didn't have students' rights, that doesn't mean the rest of us were without them. It's good to use your brain occassionaly. You should try it.

Posted By: smarterthanu Re: Suggestions? - 02/02/03 05:49 AM
Okay, sorry that I just flew off the handle about the whole rights thing. I'm just a very opinionated person and I tend just to say things before thinking. Anyway, here's another question for all of you. Since we have been discussing rights, what do you all think about the right of religion? I know you all have to have some thoughts, let me hear them.

the right of religion

Posted By: Jackie Re: Suggestions? - 02/02/03 01:00 PM
I'm just a very opinionated person and I tend just to say things before thinking. I am reminded of what Anne Shirley said about a neighbor who didn't think before she criticized; it was something like, "How would it be if I went around sticking pins into people, then excused it by saying I'm sorry--that's just the way I am".

By way of a bit of education, my dear--oops, first let me say that I am glad that you felt you could join in. There are a number who are very timid about that. This is primarily a language-discussion board. As time has gone on, we have developed something of a family feeling towards one another, and have come to some understandings, some the easy way, others not. One of the understandings was that we would try to avoid starting non-word threads, but if we just couldn't help ourselves, we would try to put them in Miscellany. I believe that our little puppy dog was asking for help from friends, which all of us are generally happy to provide. Sometimes, hearing other peoples' opinions can affect one's own.
Another understanding we have come to is that we try to avoid potentially fraught discussions; politics and religion being prime candidates. For what it's worth, we seem to have "read between the lines" that, re: religion, we seem to have agreed "to each his own".
I expect you may have gone through school being smarter than everyone else. You may not find that to be so, here. If that turns out to be the case, it will become apparent, in time. You did not ask for my opinion, but I am going to put it anyway: to me, your screen name is pretty much the equivalent of announcing to people at the outset that you believe they are inferior to you. You might want to give some consideration to what effect that might have on people, in how they will relate to you, both here and in real life.

Posted By: bonzaialsatian Re: Suggestions? - 02/02/03 03:16 PM
You put it in better words than I could ever have done, thanks Jackie!
Though, when posting this thread, my main intention had been to get name suggestions for my webpage (which I did get a lot of), I was also aware that many peolple have many varying opinions on this issue, and given the wide range of proffesions, backgrounds and experiences of the members of this board, I was also interested to hear about the ideas of others as I am aware that, however strongly I feel about an issue, my ideas are not absolute and so should always be open to debate, critisism and advice.
I know what it is like to feel strongly about, and fight for an issue, yet the whole time I have to think about am I doing the right thing? Am I going too far? Just because it may be frustrating that people don't agree with you doesn't mean that they are not as justified as you in stating thier opinions - if we can't listen to everybody's ideas and make compromises, nothing can ever be changed.

P.S: I am a 'her'.

Posted By: Jackie Re: Suggestions? - 02/02/03 04:24 PM
Well, I had planned to edit in a P.S. to my post above, but I see that I got back here too late. So--re: "You might want to give some consideration to what effect that might have on people, in how they will relate to you, both here and in real life.", I should have added that I wish that someone had made that suggestion to me two decades ago. I must have the most understanding and accepting friends on earth, is all I can say.

Posted By: Jazzoctopus Re: Suggestions? - 02/02/03 04:36 PM
bonzai, as a fellow student, I like the two early suggestions "leadtheheard" and "youthinc" most. No one really looks for websites just by typing them in, they google for them, so there's absolutely no reason to go with a bland, straightforward name. (Who would assume that monster.com is for jobs or that amazon.com is for books?) We young folks prefer creative names. (It's all part of the trend of young professionals prefering to live in a place with exicting culture than one with lower taxes.)

If you need any help with content etc, I'd me more than willing to assist. I've become a very active member in my school's chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students, which has recently assumed a leading role in engaging students in faculty and administrative decisions.

JazzO - It kinda defies the definition of "trend" when it's happening for so long... ask Thorstein Velben about "conspicuous consumption".

I picked the name from 'out of the blue'. I had no intention of causing contention or anything to that regard. I just merely liked the name. I do not know how to delete my previous posts, or I would. Anyways, I just want to ask if anyone knows the meaning of the word bipennis. DO NOT think that it's something perverted or gross. When I first discovered the meaning, I was shocked. What about you all?

Ps: Most of you are apparently older than I. I'm just a sophmore in college studying to be a teacher. So, sorry about touching on your "family feelings".

Yes. Bipennis is a good word, if you ax me. I do like a bit of Greek etymology. Hey, how 'bout you change your handle and come in again after you've learned how to deign to interact with us humble mortals?

I never made the Anu connection with smarterthanu name. I thought it was a clever play with:

Smarter Than You.

And I figured if smarterthanu thought she was smarterthanI, then so be it. Lots of people are. Big deal.

Your bipennis word is very interesting! I had a heck of a time even finding a def. The pennis part reminds me of pinnate; can one of you experts tell me if there's a connection?

Posted By: Faldage Re: Suggestions? - 02/04/03 10:41 AM
pennis part reminds me of pinnate

There is, indeed, a connection. While the normal definition of the term refers to a double-bladed ax, it's sort of payback for the use of gladiolus as a flower name. The roots are two (bi) and feather (penna) and it refers to something having two feather-like edges. The lovely ASp probably had the labrys (which its own self may beg some payback) in mind when she alluded to the Greek etymology.
