We all know what chagrin means. But what does chagreen mean?

I don't know about "chagreen," but shagreen is a kind of granular leather, like the stuff from shark skin. Is that what you were thinking of, Dr Bill?

It's the color of the peacock throne.

Dear Sparteye: I had a dandy quote from Defoe's "Moll Flanders" about her lover taking out a chagreen case, and taking rings out of it. But it was copy protected, and when I persisted in trying to copy it, my system froze and I had to shut down and reboot. A real pain.

Some machines (they all used to) still have a "screen image" or "printscreen" function whereby the screen is simply pictured or printed, without being cut or pasted onto a temporary file - would that help you keep your system from freezing in situations like the protected Moll you just ran into?

Dear wofahulicodoc: I used to have Prinscreen on computer, but haven't used it for so long I had forgotten about it. It used to waste so much colored ink I got chintzy about using it.
