I have a list of more than twenty words about color change. Let's see how long it takes the members to
equal or surpass that number.

Posted By: Jackie Re: Color change - 08/26/01 03:39 PM
1.shading
2.tone
3.tint
4.fading

I don't think this is exactly what you had in mind, but your title makes me think of kaleidoscope! I was fascinated by the one I had as a child.

Posted By: wwh Re: Color change - 08/26/01 05:25 PM
I started off with "redden". analogues of that should be obvious.I'll accept your four Jackie.

4. blend
5. tincture
6. complexion
7. timbre

how 'bout

8. lighten
9. darken
10. negativize

I'm surprised nobody so far has taken the clue in "redden".

Posted By: Keiva Re: Color change - 08/26/01 07:57 PM
11. brighten
12. dim
(Does convert to grey scale count, or is there a single word for that?)
13. sharpen
14. dull
15. highlight
16. enhance
17. clarify
18. muddy

Shadow? wash out? something meaning "make translucent"; "make opaque"?
I won't count redden, blacken, whiten, since Dr. Bill has made those easy.
Posted By: wwh Re: Color change - 08/26/01 08:31 PM
How about incarnadine, empurple, iridesce, blanch, jaundice, blush, flush, whiten, blacken, green (as in environmentalists "greening",blue (as in blue a gun barrel) brown (as toast) pale,grizzle,bleach,dye,.....

Posted By: tsuwm Re: Color change - 08/26/01 10:48 PM
stain, dye, paint, marble, splash, woad
color, discolor [heh]
and some you may not have: infuscate (darken), scumble (soften), countershade (lighten/darken), embrown (tan), rubrify (redden)

and thinking of redden, blacken, etc. vs. blue, green, brown and so forth suggests that these verbs followed the two paths that Nicholas wrote about with verbs like quicken vs. quiet. and then we have embrown and empurple.

Pigment (v.); pigmentation; iridescence; phosphorescence.

Posted By: wwh Re: Color change - 08/26/01 11:33 PM
Dear WO'N: I spent half an hour trying to think of phosphoresce, and could only think of fluoresce and with a bit of stretch, luminesce. I still have more than ten left.

saturate/desaturate, dull(v.), opacifiy, wash out.., flop(n.) is used for paints (e.g. on cars) which change color according to the angle of sight.

Posted By: WhitmanO'Neill Re: Color-change word form - 08/27/01 01:40 PM
Dear Dr. Bill, an interesting question: I originally posted iridesce and phosporesce, but couldn't find iridesce listed in any dictionary as a verb, so I changed them back to their noun incarnations. Can you establish the verb form of iridesce with a citation? Peculiarly, all the others are listed as verbs in that form, but not iridesce? Tsuwm? Anyone?

Posted By: tsuwm iridesce is a verb - 08/27/01 01:52 PM
"The corals iridesced under the surface of the clear water''

(try OneLook.com; W3 gives it as a back-formation from iridescent)

Posted By: wwh Re: iridesce is a verb - 08/27/01 03:24 PM
I confess to backformations, scraping bottom of barrel.Stretching things a bit:
pink, tan, fade, sallow, inflame, stripe, ensanguine, clarify, freckle, cyanose, glow, luminesce, irradiate, fluoresce, scintillate, coruscate, opalesce, exsanguinate, wan, and as a joke, litmus - chemical test, changes color with pH.
